The disruption of Krishna water supply to Chennai by pro-United Andhra Pradesh activists at Kandaleru in Nellore district in protest against Union Home Minister P Chidambaram's announcement setting in motion the process for statehood to Telangana is snowballing into Andhra-Tamil Nadu confrontation.
The Tamil Nadu government on Sunday announced that it would stop all transport facilities to Andhra Pradesh, if the agitators in Andhra Pradesh disrupt drinking water to Chennai. It has asked the Centre to take immediate steps for restoration of water supply. It may be mentioned that pro-Andhra Pradesh activists, cutting across party lines, stopped water supply to Chennai, upset with the statement made on Wednesday by Chidambaram who hails from Tamil Nadu. Former TDP minister S Chandramohan Reddy alleged that Chidambaram had hurt the feelings of the people of Andhra who were against division of the state. Similarly, Union Home Secretary G K Pillai through his reported statement that Hyderabad would be the capital of the new state of Telangana when it is carved out from Andhra Pradesh, added fuel to fire at a time when coastal Andhra was witnessing intense agitations, he alleged.
